A Zero-Based Budgeting App Where Every Dollar Gets a Job
Assign every dollar of income to a category before you spend a cent of it — housing, groceries, giving, savings, all of it — until nothing is left unaccounted for.
Zero-based budgeting is the method behind apps like YNAB and EveryDollar — it's also one of six budgeting methods built into Compound, so you can run it without giving up bank sync, AI categorization, or a coach if you work with one. The pitch is simple: instead of hoping there's money left at the end of the month, you decide where every dollar goes before the month even starts.
How Zero-Based Budgeting Works
You start with your monthly take-home pay. Compound suggests category groups — Giving, Saving, Housing, Transportation, Food, Personal, and Lifestyle — each pre-loaded with common categories you can turn on, turn off, rename, or reorder.
As you assign a dollar amount to each category, a running Income / Assigned / Remaining total updates live, turning green at exactly $0 and red if you've over-assigned. You can't move on until every dollar has a home — that balance-to-zero requirement is the whole point of the method, not friction we added on top of it. If your income changes later, Compound re-checks the same balance whenever you touch your categories, so you're never left budgeting against a stale number.
Inside Compound's Zero-Based Dashboard
Once you're set up, your dashboard shows an income progress ring — received vs. expected this month — sitting above a grouped list of every category, each with its budget, actual spend, and remaining balance on a status-colored bar.
New transactions get matched to a category automatically: Compound's AI proposes a match with a confidence score, and anything it isn't sure about lands in a “Needs a category” queue for you to assign in one tap. Manual assignments always win over AI, and the first few corrections you make teach the system your merchants so it stops asking.
Is Zero-Based Right for You?
Zero-based rewards people who like precision — you'll always know exactly where every dollar went, and there's no ambiguous “miscellaneous” bucket to hide behind. The tradeoff is setup time: budgeting fifteen to twenty categories to the penny takes longer than picking a percentage split. If that sounds like more structure than you want, Compound's 50/30/20 method gives you three buckets instead of fifteen, and Pay Yourself First skips categories entirely. And if you work with a coach, the setup is just as useful to them: they'll see the same category breakdown you do, so nothing gets lost in translation before your next session.
Switch Anytime — Nothing Gets Deleted
You're not locked into zero-based forever. Change your method any time from Settings, and your zero-based setup isn't wiped — it's archived. Switch to another method and come back within twelve months, and your categories, transaction history, and mappings are still there waiting, not rebuilt from scratch.
Zero-Based Budgeting, Answered
What's the difference between zero-based budgeting and a regular budget?
A regular budget just sets spending limits per category. Zero-based budgeting requires every dollar of income to be assigned somewhere — including savings — so Income minus Assigned always equals exactly zero. Nothing is left unaccounted for.
What happens if I go over budget in a category mid-month?
Compound's dashboard flags the category with a status-colored bar the moment your actual spend passes what you budgeted, so you can see it right away and decide whether to move money from another category or just spend less for the rest of the month.
Do I have to categorize every transaction myself?
No. Compound's AI proposes a category for new transactions automatically and only asks you when it isn't confident. Any manual correction you make always overrides the AI, and it learns your recurring merchants so it asks less over time.
Can I change my categories after I finish setup?
Yes. You can rename, add, or remove categories at any time from your budget settings — removing one keeps its past transaction history intact instead of deleting it.
