How auto-categorization learns

Every transaction lands with a best-guess category. When a guess is wrong and you fix it, Compound remembers — for that merchant, for everyone in your household, forever (until you change it again).

The mechanism

  1. You open a transaction and change its category — say, “Trader Joe's” from Shopping to Groceries.
  2. Compound saves a rule tying that merchant to Groceries, scoped to your household so your spouse benefits too.
  3. Past transactions from the same merchant get re-categorized to Groceries in one pass.
  4. Future transactions from that merchant skip the guesser entirely and go straight to Groceries.

Why some categories show ✨ Check category

When the AI categorizer isn't confident, the row gets a subtle ✨ Check categorybadge. It's a hint that this is a good one to review — your correction will teach the system. The badge clears the moment you confirm or change the category.

Bulk fixes

On the Transactions page, multi-select rows with the checkbox column and use the bulk action bar to apply one category to all of them. Each gets a rule, so the knowledge sticks.

Managing rules

Browse and prune saved rules at Settings → Rules. Stale rules from merchants you no longer use are safe to delete.
